Petrified Wood is a name given to wood whose cells have been entirely replaced by Quartz, leaving behind an almost exact stone replica in its place. This process takes millions of years and can only happen underground without any contact to air.  The varying colors are a result of Manganese, Iron, and Copper in the water/mud during the petrification process.
